Pattern Play

Pattern Play is an interactive cognitive rehabilitation game designed to strengthen working memory, attention, sequencing, and executive functioning through structured visual or auditory pattern repetition.

This goal-driven activity challenges clients to observe, retain, and reproduce increasingly longer sequences of stimuli, supporting both neurorehabilitation and general cognitive skill development.

How the Game Works

1️⃣ Observing the Sequence

The client observes a sequence of stimuli presented on the screen.

Stimuli may include:

  • 🎨 Colors
  • 🔢 Numbers
  • 🔊 Sounds (optional)

Each stimulus appears briefly and in a specific order.

2️⃣ Replicating the Sequence

Once the presentation ends, the client reproduces the sequence by clicking the tiles in the exact same order.

This stage targets:

  • Working memory
  • Sustained attention
  • Visual or auditory memory
  • Accuracy and response control

3️⃣ Extending the Sequence

With each successful round, one additional stimulus is added.

The client must reproduce the full sequence from beginning to end, gradually increasing cognitive load and challenge.

This progression supports:

  • Memory span expansion
  • Cognitive endurance
  • Planning and sequencing
  • Error monitoring

Error Feedback

If the client selects an incorrect colour or number, a clear error indication appears.

Depending on your settings, you can:

  • Repeat the same round
  • Restart the game
  • Limit or allow retry attempts

This allows you to tailor challenge levels and support therapeutic goals such as persistence and self-correction.

Customising Difficulty

Before starting, you can adjust the following variables to match your client’s cognitive level and therapy objectives:

  • Type of stimulus: Visual memory or auditory memory
  • Mode: Colours or numbers
  • Number of tiles
  • Sequence mode: Step-by-step or whole sequence
  • Speed of presentation
  • Retry attempts
  • Sequence goal (target length)
  • Mute sound option

These settings make Pattern Play suitable for a wide range of abilities — from early-stage rehabilitation to higher-level executive function training.

Clinical Applications

Pattern Play can be integrated into sessions targeting:

  • Working memory
  • Attention and concentration
  • Sequencing and planning
  • Executive functioning
  • Visual memory
  • Auditory memory
  • Accuracy and persistence

It works well in both in-clinic and telehealth settings and can be incorporated into structured therapy plans or used as part of home self-practice.

Using Pattern Play in Your Sessions

As with all Cognishine activities, Pattern Play provides a flexible therapeutic framework. You can modify difficulty, pacing, and support to align with your client’s treatment goals and functional needs.

The structured progression promotes client success while maintaining meaningful cognitive challenge.
